An evil magician conjures a terrible storm! A beautiful princess with a magical unicorn is cast under a spell! A prince saves the day with the help of the magical, mystical firebird! Weaving together theater, masks, puppetry, shadow play, and magic—and of course, the dazzling music of Stravinsky—the North Carolina Symphony and Enchantment Theatre tell the captivating tale of The Firebird.

Prince Ivan begins the story as a hunter---but instead of killing or capturing the beautiful firebird, he chooses to make friends. The firebird gives him a gift, and makes him a promise. By choosing understanding and compassion, the Prince makes his own triumph possible. Bravery makes him face the danger of the evil magician who could turn him into stone, but the firebird’s gift is what saves the day.

Enchantment Theatre Resident Director Leslie Reidel says that tales of “startling transformation” are the company’s specialty. “The journey of the Prince is a voyage of true self-discovery. Through the magic of live performance, actors, musicians and audience create a world of new possibilities for love and friendship.”

Adapted by William Leach, this re-imagined version of The Firebird uses colorful costumes and masks as well as creative puppetry techniques—bringing to life not only a Prince and Princess, but also a Unicorn, a host of butterflies, a storm that shakes the forest, and much more!

Stravinsky’s music for The Firebird was his first big hit as a composer, written when he was 27. He created a theme for each character, using melodies from Russian folk music, and the music grows sweeter or darker with each turn in the story.

The North Carolina Symphony is bringing this magical performance back to Raleigh as part of the Young People’s Concert series, sponsored by WakeMed Children’s, which combines great orchestral music with story and spectacle to delight audiences of all ages. There will be free, kid-friendly activities in the lobby beginning an hour before each performance, including face-painting by Paint Savvy and the Symphony’s popular Instrument Zoo, which lets kids handle and play real musical instruments.

The Firebird takes flight at 7pm on Friday, April 6, and at 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, April 7. Tickets are **$26, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more. Information, pictures, and tickets can be found atwww.ncsymphony.org/firebird.
